the crappiest logo ever

here we have the last, and least thought out of my logo ideas. the most painfully obvious one. the one you prols seemed to love. I swear, are you five?

whatever, here's what I've done with it. it doesn't rely too heavily on the color, as I made sure to check that it could stand alone as line art or desaturated greyscale. see below.

OK, so I know the sketches up here are supposed to be simple and provide insight into my style and thought process while doing artwork, so I did this crap. i hope it's appreciated. here we go...

I start with a simple wireframe, like so, just to get an idea of the pose and attitude of the character I'm creating. I really enjoy doing character portraits, and they make up the bulk of my work.

so after that, I start "fleshing out" the pose. sometimes I don't decide what the character is going to be until I get here. I often decide on a female character, 'cause I like boobs.

then, I clean it up a little bit by taking out the wireframe.

When I start "clothing" the character, I like to get kind of elaborate. armor and fabrics and texture. but I'm keeping it kinda basic here. I put the clothes on over the original nude pose.

then, I do a little cleanup here and there to make the clothes look complete and opaque, so that the body's outline doesn't show through. because I'm working in photoshop here, it's easy to do with layers! I also add all my secondary details and such here usually too. I usually do hair last, because my ideas for the style and such change a lot as I go along... this is another reason why I like short hair.

and finally, a look at the whole thing.

I might come back later and really pimp this little elf-girl out, but for right now, I'm leaving her here. (aww, so sad, I know.)

Beware The Rise Of The Savage Tide!

So, uh, just in case nobody noticed, I'm a total D&D nerd. I'm a RPGA registered Dungeon Master, and have subscriptions to both "Dungeon" and "Dragon" Magazine. me and a group of friends have been playing through Dungeon Magazine's new "Savage Tide" campaign arc, and have been enjoying it thoroughly. these are some sketches I did for my group of some NPCs the players encounter in the third chapter of the story, "The Sea Wyverns Wake." these are loosely based on the art included in the article by Ben Wootten and Warren Mahy. all these things are of course protected under copywrite law, but is available via public gaming license. I'm not a lawyer, so i don't know the details, but i figured I'd cite the sources for posterity.

Lavinia Vanderboren, the PC party's employer. She hires them to be troubleshooters in tracking down her missing brother, Vanthus, and later leads an expedition to The Isle of Dread to take responsibility for her deceased parent's legacy, the remote colony of Farshore.

Kora Whistlegap, the Major Domo of the Vanderboren Estate.

Captain Amella Venkalie, who was hired on to command the captured pirate Vessel known as "The Sea Wyvern" on Lavinia's expedition. She enjoys drinking, cursing, and fighting as much as any true sailor would, if not more. she dislikes gnomes and is often annoyed with Urol's technical banter on sea life and plants.

Tavey Nesk is the cabin boy of the Sea Wyvern, brought abord by Amella, who found him years ago floating on a plank of wood in the middle of the ocean along a shipping lane. he idolizes adventurers and works hard, hoping to become one someday. Urol is an old gnome, obsessed with researching the exotic flora and fauna of the Amedio jungle and The Isle of Dread, and is an expert on such lore. Father Feres claims to be a simple pilgrim seeking to bring the word of Heironius's faith to the settlement of Farshore.

A mysterious passenger on The Sea Wyvern, Skald insisted on taking only room and board for his service on the trip and in Farshore. He is often sullen and quiet, working hard and keeping to himself.

Lirith Veldirose, a spunky, young, freckled red-head, enlisted on the trip seeking adventure and riches. she wears many exotic and colorful scarves and fine fabrics in a wanton mish-mash under her leather armor, and has several finely-wrought peices of jewelry on, including a sparkling emrald nose-peircing stud. she has a very flashy and unabashed style and manner in all things.

OK, I was supposed to start doing this weeks ago, but here we go, none the less! as soon as I figure out how to get images to show up in this gods-forsaken thing, we'll really be in business...

This was a most recent pic done as a commision for an online friend. I can't really explain it, but "Star Ocean: The Second Story" fans will get the gag if Ashton Anchors was one of their favorite characters. =P
